Because of the scarring on her back and weakness in her muscles from Spina Bifida Kali has a harder time getting around and doing things.
In Occupational therapy we work more on fine motor skills. She learned how to feed herself baby puffs and cheerios here. For Kali fine motor can be hard because when she shifts her balance while sitting to pick up a puff she needs to engaged her core as well as muscles around her back. She has strengthened them so much now and is a little pro at eating her snacks. We work on sensory issues and play at lot. We love Miss Katie even though sometime she gets Kali a bit frustrated. Eventually OT will be working on helping Kali how to dress her self and all the things that can be more difficult in her day to day activities.
These big girls get to come to OT and PT with me and are usually very well behaved. One time Miss Katie even let them play on this swing!
After an hour of work, Kali is tired and usually falls asleep on the way home.
Physical therapy we work a lot on loosening scar tissue and getting her ready to get up on all fours crawling and eventually on to walking. I have heard from so many people that PT is the most important thing for children with Spina Bifida because it lays all that groundwork and helps them keep working toward that awesome goal of walking!
We have been working so hard to help Kali like tummy time. She has never liked it, not because she couldn't lift up her head but because on her tummy it strains and stretched her back a little uncomfortably. April she finally started liking her tummy a little bit. So we worked on getting her to roll to her tummy since that wasn't so traumatic to be on her tummy. Her silly little arms just never wanted to work with her and kept getting her stuck. This week in PT with a lot of hard work she was rolling over to her tummy and back to her back. Later that day she added to her to skills I do often and all the time list.
She is very happy with her new skill!
